The capacity of European battery storage facilities is expected to increase approximately fivefold to more than 50 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, representing an investment of around €80 billion. This is according to a recent study by Aurora Energy Research.
Rapid market growth This growth is a response to the increasing share of wind and solar energy in the European energy mix, which now accounts for around one-third. However, renewable sources are dependent on weather conditions, which will drive demand for battery storage to ensure a stable energy supply.
Despite the expected increase in battery storage capacity, there may still be a shortage of capacity needed to balance national energy grids.
The European Association for Storage of Energy estimates that up to 200 GW of storage capacity will be needed by 2030. To illustrate, a record 3.7 GW of battery projects were added in Europe in 2024, bringing the total capacity to 10.8 GW.
What is driving the energy storage boom? Businesses and individuals are increasingly realizing that battery storage can be used to optimize energy consumption by storing electricity when it is cheaper and using it during peak times when prices are higher. This helps reduce electricity bills and allows for more efficient management of energy costs. It also reduces dependence on traditional energy suppliers and allows them to use their own green energy even when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing.
Storage also serves as a backup source in the event of grid outages, which is critical for businesses with continuous operations, such as data centers, manufacturing plants, or hospitals. They also help stabilize grid voltage, protecting sensitive technology from power fluctuations and outages.
The decline in the cost of battery technology is contributing to greater availability, which is also reflected in related battery drive segments and the development of battery products. Battery drives are thus becoming increasingly popular not only in electric mobility, but also in home and garden machinery. People and companies are increasingly choosing this type of drive for environmental reasons, but also for its flexibility and quiet, economical operation.
Overall, the European renewable energy market is now driving a boom in battery storage, which represents a significant opportunity for investors and contributes to the stability of energy grids in the region.
