Huawei Digital Power, in collaboration with SchneiTec, has successfully commissioned the first grid-forming energy storage project in Cambodia, certified by TÜV SÜD. This marks a significant milestone in the country's transition to a sustainable energy future.
Successful project launch The newly completed 12 MWh battery project includes a 2 MWh test facility designed to validate the system, which is equipped with Huawei's Smart String & Grid Forming Energy Storage System. The system has demonstrated its exceptional ability to stabilise the grid in both off-grid and weak-grid conditions by facilitating the seamless integration of intermittent renewable energy sources.
The project, which represents the first deployment of a battery energy storage system (BESS) for grid support (Grid-Forming) in Cambodia, has received prestigious TÜV SÜD certification.
The project was jointly tested by TÜV SÜD, SchneiTec and Huawei Digital Power. TÜV SÜD, world-renowned for its strict standards in energy technology testing and certification, verified key technical parameters of the Smart-String Grid-Forming BESS, including inertial response, low and high voltage resistance, frequency support and overload resistance.
Key test results:
Grid-forming inertia: Huawei's grid-forming technology demonstrated exceptional inertial response, achieving a time constant (Tc) of 3–20 seconds, which significantly exceeds the standard requirement of 3–12 seconds and enables faster grid stabilisation.
Low/high voltage bridging: The system effectively handled voltage fluctuations and maintained network stability during short-term voltage dips and fluctuations. It remained operational across a wide voltage range from 5% to 130% of the rated network voltage.
Overload and frequency support: The grid-forming BESS operated stably and reliably under short-term overload conditions of up to 300% and effectively suppressed low-frequency oscillations in the range of 0.2 Hz–5 Hz.
Power restoration after outage (black start): The technology enabled a fast black start under load, allowing for efficient grid restoration after a complete outage.
A significant milestone in the energy sector This independent verification of Huawei's grid-forming BESS represents the first overseas validation of the system on site, conducted in full compliance with international standards, including IEC, Chinese national standards, the UK Grid Code, and German VDE standards.
TÜV SÜD certification proves that Huawei's grid-forming BESS meets globally recognised standards for energy management and grid stability. This is a significant milestone in the technological development of Huawei Digital Power and a breakthrough moment in the evolution of innovation in the energy sector.
Huawei Digital Power's successful collaboration with SchneiTec confirms the significant progress Cambodia is making in its transition to renewable energy. In line with Cambodia's ongoing renewable energy strategy, Huawei Digital Power will continue to drive innovation and provide stable, scalable and reliable solutions to meet the country's growing demand for sustainable electricity and support the development of its energy infrastructure.
